Is there a proper way to sleep well? Most men just hit the pillow and sleep without putting much thought into how they sleep or what is the best way to sleep. Sleep is an essential and necessary part of a man’s life. Without sleep no man can function well physically or mentally.
Problems sleeping can cause poor concentration. You can see how this would affect work performance. They can also result in weight gain because people who don’t get enough sleep are often tempted to take unhealthy snacks at ungodly hours. Ever feel like waking up at 3am for a hamburger?
Many men are tempted to dip into their sleep time in order to allocate time to something else. We sleep less to exercise more, we sleep less to work more or we sleep less to study more etc …
This is wrong and can actually be dangerous because sleep keeps the mind and body alert and allows you to work better, concentrate better, exercise better and understand the environment better. So you can’t excel at your job or school without making sure you get enough rest.
Have you ever watched nature documentaries? What do you often see the male lion doing? Resting, that’s right. Why? Because the “king of the beasts” knows that if he wants to be able to keep being “the man” and protect his family then he needs make sure he gets enough sleep.
With sleep as with everything else, quality trumps quantity. Some men spend way too many hours in bed and still wake up tired. In fact people who sleep too much almost always wake up tired! For most men, 7 to 8 hours a night is than enough.
A little exercise a day is a great idea to help you to sleep well. Walk, run, or take part in a sport like golf or soccer.
Wake up at the right time – don’t set your alarm to go off while you are in the middle of a sleep cycle. A sleep cycle is 90 minutes, so divide your sleep time to intervals of 90 minutes and be sure to wake up at the right time so that you wake up feeling refreshed and not groggy.
A routine is important for a man’s body to function well. For example try going to bed at the same time and waking up at the same time every day. Insomniacs should avoid napping during the day. However strong the urge to nap is, just save it for the night when you will need it more. For non insomniacs, a nap is okay once in a while when needed, especially when you have lost a couple of hours of sleep.
A heavy dinner is never a good idea. A late dinner is also not a good idea. Have dinner at a good time – at least before 8pm and don’t make it too heavy or it could interfere with your sleep.
Avoid waking up at night to brainstorm about an issue that comes to mind. If an idea comes to mind during the night, avoid waking up to work out the problem. You can scribble something on your diary and refer to it in the morning.
Here are a few more things you can do during the day that will help you to sleep better at night. Expose yourself to sunlight and exercise – preferably at the same time. Taking a walk, jogging or riding a bike would be perfect.
So there you have it, now you know why getting a good night’s sleep is so critical and some simple steps you can take to make sure you get it. Some guys think being sleep deprived is some kind of badge of honor because it proves that they’re hard workers but remember, “what goes around comes around”, so if you don’t treat your body right then be prepared to get the same back in kind.
