brain healthBrain health is an important aspect of every man’s well being. Every man should take steps to ensure the best diet and exercise for his brain development. Just like your body, your brain needs a workout to keep in shape. It also needs certain nutrients.

Eat more whole grains and less refined foods and you will be feeding your brain better. Cereal – and we don’t mean the kind that is 50% sugar – wheat bran, whole grain pasta and wheat germ are perfect for your brain. Fish oils contain essential omega-3 fatty acids that are necessary for the functioning of your central nervous system. Salmon is particularly helpful.

Blueberries are an excellent food for the brain as they help to relieve memory loss. Tomatoes too contain lycopene which protects your brain cells from damage caused by free radicals leading to ailments like Alzheimer’s.

Eat flax seeds because they help to keep your brain sharp. Flax seeds contain ALAs.  ALAs aid in the functioning of the cerebral cortex. Go nuts with walnuts, pecans, walnuts and macadamia which contain nutrients that can help keep the brain sharp. They can prevent insomnia and help your memory and ability to think clearly.

Eat Mediterranean food; much of traditional Greek and Italian food is actually good for your brain. So go ahead and indulge in olive oil, green leafy vegetables, wine and nuts.

A moderate amount of coffee is actually good for the brain as it helps you to concentrate. Just don’t add fatty things and sweeteners to coffee as these could cloud away the positive effects.

Chocolate isn’t just yummy either, it also helps your brain! While dark chocolate can help you to concentrate white chocolate can improve your memory. So don’t be afraid to indulge your inner chocoholic.

You must keep in mind (pun intended) that keeping your brain in shape isn’t all just about you’re the foods you eat.

Learn Baby Learn! Your brain needs a regular workout in order to keep growing. Keep learning new things. Learn a new language, make new friends, enroll in a class; any new thing you learn will keep your brain stimulated.

Sleep Well: Get a good night’s sleep. Sleeping well can do wonders for your brain functions. A well rested brain is a strong and capable brain.

Practice Mind Teasers: Fill in the crossword puzzle. Just taking out a few minutes to fill in a crossword puzzle once a day or every other day can do wonders for your brain. It is even more satisfying when you notice you are getting better at it.

Develop Your Memory: Practice your memory by listening to – and memorizing – your favorite songs or by playing memory games.

Speak More Than One Language: Bilinguals are proven to possess more cognitive abilities. Being able to think and speak in more than one language offers your brain a regular workout. Bilinguals are even better able to keep dementia at bay during old age.

Even if you don’t master the second language, just the effort made in learning and speaking a new language has massive benefits for your brain function.

So as you can see, there are a host of things that you can and should do to keep your brain healthy and in tip top shape. Remember the old saying, “use it or lose it”, the same thing applies to your brain.
